WHat should I do about portable lighting?
I like staged photography, and artificial lighting often plays a part in my photos. There are locations I'd like to take photos using artificial light but the place don't offer it. So are there generators that could power mini spotlights/lamps or really strong torches?
Best thing to do is get yourself a couple of hotshoe flashes (speedlights) and fire them wirelessly off camera with radio triggers. Sunpak, Vivitar 285HV, Nikon SB-26's are all good choices, available from eBay - a couple of these & some RF-602 triggers will set you back around £100.
Get a couple of lightstands & adapters to mount your flashes (£50 total for 2 stands & adapters), and for light modifiers a softbox (24" Ezyfold box off eBay, £45) or a shoot thru umbrella (£15ish).
That's plenty to get you started and all portable & fairly light weight. Hotshoe flashes are only around 60W/s, so less power than basic studio strobes (150W/s & up) but unless you're trying to overpower bright sunlight, they'll be fine.
