Once you have decided that you want to make your own garden or backyard pond, you will need to go shopping for a pond liner. Since they are flexible and will take the shape of your custom pond you can dig any shape you want, in keeping with the decor or theme of your landscape. After you are ready with the shape, you can settle the liner in it, so that when you fill it with water, it holds it in the pond, preventing it from seeping out.

These liners are quite sturdy and can withstand any temperature whether it is summer or winter. They are also UV resistant. A majority of these are made out of polyethylene. They are also supported by a warranty of twenty years on average, during which period you can expect your pond to be leak proof.

While choosing a pond liner, you must ensure that you have the right measurements of your pond since it would be annoying to discover at the time of installation that the liner you got is inadequate in size. So measure your pond to make sure that you have enough to cover the entire length, sides and depth as well as extending over the top.

To get the right size measure the width, length and depth of the pond. If it is of any particular shape you must be extra careful to take that into account. If you need a large pond liner, you might have to join two or more pieces together to get the right size. But it is always better to get the right size as a single piece to avoid the chances of leaking and repair.

Large liners come in a wide price range depending on size. You might need an under layer when you do the install as it can protect your liner from getting damaged or punctured. If you decide to go in for a kit, it will have an under layer as part of it.

Maintaining your pond liner is an important task. Whether they are preformed or just liners that you install to the shape of your pond, can get punctured or sag with all the debris, rocks and other add-ons. If it is a leak, then it can be repaired easily with a patch from a seal kit.

Here are some tips to bear in mind when it comes to pond liners:

PVC liners can get stiff in very cold climates. This makes them prone to puncturing and leaking. PVC is not UV resistant.
As materials go, EPDM liners are a better option compared to PVC and also more expensive. But if you reside in a cold climate, EPDM has its advantages in that it is thicker, UV resistant and more sturdy.
If you have fish in your pond, then you need to get the right fish pond liner. Even though any pond liner would not actually be unsafe it is better to double check before you buy.
It is not mandatory to get an expensive liner if you want to rebuild your pond every year or once in two years. In such cases, you can go ahead and get a cheaper one that you can just pull out.
In terms of weight, PVC is lighter than EPDM. It is therefore easier to fold into shape.

Pond liners are ingenious alternatives compared to the cumbersome process of applying cement or using ponds made of fiberglass. Properly selected and installed, your pond will be your pride and joy for a long time.
