Dogs Backpack Hiking
An Akita Inu, a German Shepherd or a Doberman?
After weeks of researching, I've narrowed which dogs would best fit my lifestyle to these three, but I can't seem to choose which one.
I'd plan to take my dog on jogs, hikes, and even camping. One of the main reasons I want a dog, is for companionship. So, I would be more than willing to spend lots of time with my dog everyday. My main concern would be separation anxiety if left in my apartment for a couple hours a day during workdays. I'd be happy to get a Kong or a couple of other toys.
Backpacking is important to me, so I need a dog that would do well in the outdoors. Oh, I live in a environment with fairly cool temperatures too.
So, which dog would suit me best?
Akita Inu (not to be confused with the Akita) are generally not high engery dogs. They need a good amount of excerise but they are not happy to keep going when they've had enough! I think you should look into some of the mountain breeds, St. Bernards, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Estrela Mountain Dogs etc. I think some of those woulf fit the bill much better. You could also train them to carry a small pack when you go backpacking.
