Crank Flashlight Radio
Disasters can come in many forms and although you cannot protect against anything that may come your way, it is important to be as prepared as possible to improve your chances to come out of it as best you can. To prepare for disaster you must develop a disaster strategy based on your geographical location and situation. Having no electric power, contaminated water or both could be a real problem for many of us if we do not have a disaster recovery plan of our own. `
In our current society, people typically take it for granted that the comforts of home will always be available to them. Electricity, clean water, heat, clothing and food are all items necessary to survive during a manmade or natural disaster. Since it is unknown as to where a when a disaster will strike, have the basic tools and plan will help when needed the most.
If you live in areas where natural disasters such as hurricanes or tornadoes are prevalent, it is even more important to plan your strategy based on the high probability of a storm ravaging your home or disrupting your lives in some way. Aside from the standard items like can goods, bottled water and blankets, the items listed below may expand your thinking and reasoning by providing additional information that normally would not be evident when planning for a disaster.
Item 1. Gas Powered Generator
Gasoline Powered generators - These units can range from small to large units based on the capacity and price range. Gas powered generators are one of the must have items due to their ability to quickly generate power to your appliances if needed. Unfortunately if there is no fuel available the system is unusable.
Item 2. Solar Powered Generator
Solar energy generators can also be a source for backup electricity during blackouts. Again the size of the battery determines the amount of "juice" you will have to run the essential appliances until power is restored. These units are not as powerful as gas generators, but the sun can be used to recharge the battery for remote usage.
Item 3. Hand powered Radio/Flashlights
Standard batteries are fine for short term usage but there are newer technologies that can provide longer term power needs if this avenue is pursued. There are flashlights and radios that are not powered by traditional batteries, but generators that derive their power through a hand crank design. Once the crank is turned several times it stores the within an internal generator to power the device at will.
Item 4. Gas or Charcoal Grill
Propane or Charcoal - Your gas or charcoal grill can be invaluable when your electric stove is inoperable. Of course, do not keep these items in the house for safety reasons. In the winter, you can also use this as a heat source in some cases if needed as long as safety precautions are followed. If you have a smoker, it is another tool that can provide a heat and cooking source if needed.
Item 5. Water Purifier
Drinking water that has been contaminated can no longer be trusted for drinking and bathing purposes. Bottled water can only be sufficient for temporary situations but long term access to water is important. Having a water purifier can mitigate some of these issues by creating a longer term solution
Item 6. Power inverter
A power inverter may also be something that would be added to your disaster kit. This small portable device will take a normal DC battery from a car or boat and convert it into an AC current source of power sufficient to run items in your home like a microwave or other small appliances. A larger 5000 watt unit can literally run some of your home electrical devices from your car, which can be important part of your strategy.
Item 7. Vegetable Garden
Vegetable Garden - This may not be as obvious, but starting and maintaining a vegetable garden can provide much needed food during an extended period of time. Of course, the local market may also be open but it would be prudent to have access to these foods in case the local market is not an option.
Item 8. Manual Can Opener
Can goods are the obvious choice to when building your food storage closet. Having a manual can opener is also obvious, but can easily be forgotten
Item 9. Plastic 5 Gallon buckets with a specialized food seal lid
Plastic 5 Gallon Buckets are a must have for storing grains like rice or cornmeal, beans or lentils. Storing your dry goods in 5 gallon buckets sealed with a food seal lid will keep the food fresh and free from pests that could penetrate your food stores.
Item 10. Rain Barrel
A Rain barrel is another device that can bring an important aspect to your Disaster Kit. If your water supply is tainted or totally disrupted, water coming from a rainstorm is freely available for use. This water can be used in flushing toilets or can be purified for drinking water. Rainwater can also be a source for keeping your food supply (garden) alive and healthy during droughts.
In conclusion, being prepared for the inevitable disaster is something everyone should do today. Having the ability to respond accordingly if no electric or water is available. Preparation is key and can provide a level of comfort for you and your family.
