Big Agnes
Camping is all about getting away and having fun. But at the same time it's important to keep safety in mind. Nothing will ruin a trip quicker than an injury or someone getting lost from the group. I've put together seven camping safety tips that will help keep you your family and friends safe.
Plan your arrival time so that you have at least a couple of hours before sundown. I've arrived at the campground after dark and set up camp, while it can be done is very difficult. It's is also very dangerous because you won't get a lay of the land. This includes any holes, drop-offs, or otherwise dangerous terrain.
Most people do this already but it's important that you check the weather beforehand. Take note of the general forecast. Regardless prepare for a situation a bit colder and wetter than forecast. Bring a raincoat and an extra blanket.
When hiking with friends and family stay with your group. Make sure everyone with you has a trail map and is able to read it.
If your group is planning on splitting up and exploring different trails be sure that you have a meeting place and a set time. For many people it will be the campsite or the car. Make sure if you head out on a trail anywhere near sunset you know how much sunlight you have left.
On a cold night it can be tempting to pull your tent close to the fire. This can be very dangerous, be sure to have enough space between you and the fire. Most tents will burn or melt. This is a serious hazard for sleeping camper.
When setting up your camp be sure to check the ground for anthills, snake holes, or otherwise dangerous critter lairs. It's not a good feeling to wake up in a tent full of fire ants.
You should be aware of the terrain above you as well. Look up and make sure you're not camping under dead or dying trees. A strong wind can easily blow down branches, sometimes quite large ones, onto your camp.
Above all, use your common sense. Camping can be a lot of fun but there are things you need to watch out for. By using these seven camping safety tips your next camping trip should be safer. Enjoy the outdoors!
